Designed to address disinfectant shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, this kit helps provide an effective and simple disinfectant solution for your shop. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is very effective as an antiviral if mixed to a 70% concentration. The convenient graded mixed cup included in the kit provides an easy way to mix a 70% IPA solution. The spray bottle is useful to quickly decontaminate surfaces as part of your overall COVID-19 management strategy. We also sell various rags and disposable wipes. More details about mixing your own IPA solution to meet Health Canada guidelines is included in the detailed product description below.

What's in the Isopropyl Acohol (IPA) Disinfectant Kit?

Our IPA Kit includes:

  • A 5 Gallon Pail of Isopropyl Alcohol
  • A 5 Quart graduated mixing cup for conveniently dilluting IPA to 70%
  • Spray bottle for efficiently delivering IPA solution to working surfaces that need to be disinfected

Using the 5 quart mixing cup, IPA should be diluted to 70% with water. Distilled water is ideal but not mandatory.

Why must IPA be Dilluted?

For most antiviral and disinfection situations, including effective destruction of Coronaviruses like the one associated with COVID-19, a 70% solution is the ideal concentration.  Althrough COVID-19 is caused by a virus, a 70% solution is also most effective against bacteria.   Concentrations as low as 60% are still effective.  Below that level, IPA solutions may not effectively or completely destroy viruses.

It may seem counter-intuitive but very high concentrations or IPA, or pure IPA, are less effective than the recommended 70% solution.
There are two many reasons for this:

1. Pure IPA is very volatile and evaporates quickly.  This means that when kept in pure form, IPA will quickly evaporate off of surfaces, sometimes before a spray has time to spread over the entire surface.

2. Many viruses, including, coronaviruses,  have outer protective envelopes.  When they do, this protective structure slows the penetration of IPA into the internal viral structures and the IPA can break down or evaporate before it can kill the virus.   Although bacteria are not connected to COVID-19, they do cause other infections.   A similar thing can happen with bacteria because bacteria have protective cell membranes that take a while to penetrate.   By dilluting the IPA, it is less volatile and doesn't break down or evaporate before it can get inside a micro-organism and kill it.

It is important to note that while IPA is very effective against many micro-organisms, including the virus that causes COVID-19, the single most important practice you can follow to prevent spread of COVID-19 and other germs is frequent hand-washing.

What can IPA solution be used for?

IPA Solution, can be sprayed onto frequently touched surfaces in your shop or workplace.   There include door handles, light switches, railings, tools, computers, faucets, etc.   It can also be used to spray and wipe down items being shipped out of your facility to customers or distribution centres.

Should I wash my hands with IPA solution?

There are numerous videos that have been online during the COVID-19 pandemic that show proper hand washing technique.   While 70% IPA can be an effective disinfectant, it does evapourate quickly (before complete coverage of hands, under finger nails, etc) and can damage skin.   For this reason, it is generally combined with gel agents like Aloe that cause it to spread into crevaces and evapourate less quickly.

Between a quick wash with an IPA spray and a thorough cleaning with soap according to techniques shown online, the proper 30 second wash with soap is likely to be more effective.

Frequent hand washing is also a very important of any COVID-19 prevention strategy.

Should I injest IPA or take it internally?

Under NO circumstances should IPA EVER be consumed, injected or breathed in.    The same destructive behaviour that it has for bacteria and viruses applies to what it does to most of the other cells in your body.   IPA, like most dinfectants is therefore very poisonous, especially at high concentrations.
